Exclusive Interview with Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling

“I want people to feel like they can be brave enough to do the things they want to do”

— Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling is an up-and-coming music star in the USA. At age 23, Stirling was a quarter-finalist on Season 5 of America’s Got TalentHer self-titled album debuted two years later, in 2012. This fearless and humble classically trained violinist, electronic music impresario, and dancer, defied conventions by creating her groundbreaking vision of cinematic violin-driven electronic music. She has since recorded two more albums, Shatter Me (2014) and Brave Enough (2016), and continues to dream big.

I am very privileged to hear from her.

I present to you, an exclusive interview with Lindsey Stirling:

How did your interest in the violin start?

When I was really young, my Dad would take our family to these free orchestra concerts in the park.  Because we didn’t have a lot of money, this was something fun we could do together.  I immediately noticed that the concert master came out last and got extra-special attention, and that all the “cool” parts were played by the violin section.  I was sold.

Which musicians inspire you?

Ellie Goulding, Michael Jackson, David Guetta, Weezer, Avril Lavigne, Rachel Platten.

What goes through your mind when you are composing a song?

I try to compose with an emotion or story in mind. I usually work together with a producer on the backtrack first.  If I can put the violin on top of it and it “works,” I keep it.  If I can’t make it work and it’s just not feeling right, I set it aside and work on something else until the music speaks to my heart.

As seen in your YouTube videos, the dance, body movements, landscapes, stories, themes, costumes; what inspired you to include these elements to create a novel experience with violin music?

These are all things that I love.  I couldn’t see any reason not to include them together as one artistic creation.  Why not? Because others said it couldn’t be done, or because no one had done it before?  Those are exactly the reasons why I did.

How do you choose which violins to use?

If I’m on stage I have to use the violin that will amplify.  For certain songs, I use any number of violins for their look or style. If I’m in a more intimate setting, I always choose my acoustic violin.

As a talented performer, is practice very important? How do you push past the monotony of scales and practice songs?

I was always taught to practice scales and arpeggios till I was blue in the face.  Honestly, mastering them has given me the freedom to play and create whatever music I desire.  If you’re a young player DO NOT skimp on your scales and arpeggios!  😀  I always rewarded myself at the end of a difficult practice by allowing myself something fun to play.

Recently, you’ve teamed up with Andrew McMahon for the song “Something Wild” from Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. It’s a beautiful song with encouraging lyrics. Please share with us the process, and your experience creating this song.

I’m a Pete’s Dragon fan, so I was so excited when that was the project. And meeting Daniel, right off the bat it was like “This is going to be fun”. I’ve always kind of hoped like some day I’d get to write on a score, be on a score, do some soundtrack work. And so when I got the call, I was so excited. You know it’s all happened so fast, I can’t believe it. Now I’m here in London, doing it. It was a really cool experience to kind of think, you know, “What is the boy feeling right now?” If his soul is singing through my violin, what would it be saying?

I’ve never written like that before, and it was a really new experience. I love anything Disney. It’s a bucket list of mine, and I’ve always wanted to work in a soundtrack. So to start to get into that world, it was really fun.

Lastly, what would you like to tell your fans and aspiring violinists in Singapore?

I’m honored to have your support; hoping to visit Singapore in the future! Until then, never give in and never give up.

Something Wild

Featuring Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
Produced By Nico Stadi, Josh Abraham & RUMORS
Album: Brave Enough, Lindsey Stirling
[Verse 1]
You had your maps drawn
You had other plans
To hang your hopes on
Every road they let you down felt so wrong
So you found another way

You’ve got a big heart
The way you see the world
It got you this far
You might have some bruises
And a few of scars
But you know you’re gonna be okay

[Pre-Chorus]
Even though you’re scared
You’re stronger than you know

[Chorus]
If you’re lost out where the lights are blinding
Caught in all, the stars are hiding
That’s when something wild calls you home, home
If you face the fear that keeps you frozen
Chase the sky into the ocean
That’s when something wild calls you home, home

[Verse 2]
Sometimes the past can
Make the ground beneath you feel like a quicksand
You don’t have to worry
You reach for my hand
And I know you’re gonna be okay
You’re gonna be okay

[Pre-Chorus]
Even though you’re scared
You’re stronger than you know

[Chorus]
If you’re lost out where the lights are blinding
Caught in all, the stars are hiding
That’s when something wild calls you home, home
If you face the fear that keeps you frozen
Chase the sky into the ocean
That’s when something wild calls you home, home

[Bridge]
Calls you home
Calls you home
Calls you home
Calls you home

If you’re lost out where the lights are blinding
Caught in all, the stars are hiding
That’s when something wild calls you home…

[Chorus]
If you’re lost out where the lights are blinding
Caught in all, the stars are hiding
That’s when something wild calls you home, home
If you face the fear that keeps you frozen
Chase the sky into the ocean
That’s when something wild calls you home, home
